Seaside Aquarium: Last week, we were joined by Keith Chandler and Tiffany from the Seaside Aquarium for a fascinating presentation. They shared the history and
inner workings of this unique local treasure. Originally built in 1924 as a natatorium—with seawater piped in from 1,260 feet away at the water’s edge—the building
was converted into an aquarium in 1937. That original infrastructure still supports the marine life housed there today.
One notable moment in the aquarium’s history was in 1952, when it became the first facility to successfully raise a seal pup in captivity—affectionately named Tubby.
Keith also spoke about the importance of responsible interactions with wildlife. For example, seals resting on the beach should not be approached or disturbed. If you
see wildlife that appears to be in distress or out of place, please contact the aquarium directly rather than local law enforcement.

For those interested in giving back, there are several ways to support the aquarium’s
efforts:
•
Drop off old or "uncle" razor clams—the fish and crustaceans love them.
•
Participate in monthly beach cleanups, held on the first Saturday of each month at
the aquarium.
Many thanks to Keith and Tiffany for an engaging and educational visit!
